Is It a GO or a NO for Sand Glass Design For Traffic Lights?

Thanva Tivawong designed the LED Sand Glass for Traffic Lights and people are liking it.
Being able to relate Sand Glass to Traffic Lights is pretty awesome.

Tivawong's design is interactive and fresh. There'll be no need for people on the road to read from numbers while waiting. Hopefully, This proposal can improve traffic lights.

A Man Goes To Doctor And Discovers That He's Actually A Woman

A 44-year-old marries man got the shock of his life as the stomach pain and blood in his urine that he is experiencing led to an unexpected revelation. Chen visited his doctor to have his checkup, but his world was turned upside down when it was discovered that he is actually a woman and the stomach pain and blood in his urine was due to his menstruation.

The doctors at the hospital was also shocked with the result of Chen's checkup. As they examined Chen further, they discovered that he actually had a uterus and ovaries. Though he has a penis, it was axtually deformed but that didn't stop him from having a wife for ten years.

“He had short hair and was dressed in man's clothes,We did not realize he was a female at first." - Dr. Zhao

A blood test was also done, the blood test confirmed that Chen was chromosomally female. The doctors concluded that Chen is actually called adrenogenital syndrome. The adrenogenital syndrome is usually treatable with hormone therapy only if it is detected earlier. Unfortunately for Chen, he only have discovered it when he's 44 years old.

Would You Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

With Halloween upon us, have you ever wondered what Sydney would look like in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse?

Its streets and world-famous landmarks haunted by hoardes of the walking dead, our city and its smoking harbour has been eerily depicted by digital designers, post-apocalypse.

The decimated city is featured alongside London, Paris and New York, designers finding high-resolution images of famous landmarks or tourist attractions, and photoshopping them to convey a wave of mass destruction, caused by the undead.

Seals Caught Having Sex With Penguins (video)

Seals have been caught having sex with penguins, leaving scientists puzzled.

The odd behaviour, seen on a remote island, was captured on camera and published in the Polar Biology journal, according to the BBC and other media.

It’s not the first time amorous seals have been spotted forcing themselves on the little birds — a similar incident was reported in 2006.

But this time it has happened more often — and has been caught on film. Warning: The video below may upset some people.

“Honestly I did not expect that follow up sightings of a similar nature to that 2006 one would ever be made again, and certainly not on multiple occasions,’’ Nico de Bruyn, of the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, said. .

Fur seals often catch and eat penguins on the island, but in three out of the four sexual incidents the penguin was allowed to go after its ‘encounter’.

The fourth penguin was eaten.

Scientists are now trying to work out why the seals are behaving as they are, and have peculated that the mammals may have learned the habit from one another.

Why You Generally Shouldn’t Put Metals in a Microwave

First, it should be noted that it is not unsafe to put all metals in the microwave.  Indeed, you often put metals in the microwave anytime you put a hot pocket in the little pouch and place it in the microwave.  The pouch has a thin layer of aluminum lining the inside that is designed to absorb the microwaves and heat up a bit so as to brown the outside of the hot pocket.

On top of that, the inside walls of your microwave oven are made of metal.   This forms something called a Faraday Cage which traps the microwaves inside the box, so that they cook the food and not things around the microwave oven, like you.  If you look closely, you’ll also see that the window you look at the food through has metal mesh lining it.  The holes in this mesh are smaller than the wavelengths of the electromagnetic radiation your microwave is producing.  This makes it so the waves can’t pass through the holes.  Visible light, however, is comprised of much smaller wavelengths, so that form of radiated energy passed through the holes just fine, allowing you to see inside your microwave while it’s running without getting cooked yourself.
So if the inside of your microwave is lined with metal and certain food products, such as hot pockets and pot-pies, have containers that contain metal, why does your microwave manual say not to put metal in the microwave?

First, let’s talk a little about how a microwave oven actually works.  At its core, a microwave oven is a pretty simple device.  It’s basically just a magnetron hooked up to a high voltage source.  This magnetron directs microwaves into a metal box.  These generated microwaves then bounce around inside the microwave until they are absorbed via dielectric loss in various molecules resulting in the molecules heating up (more on how this works in the Bonus Factoids section).  Matter that work well here are things such as water, ceramics, certain polymers, etc.  These all end up converting microwave energy into heat quite effectively.
Metals, on the other hand, are great conductors of electricity, being packed with electrons that can move freely.  Depending on the shape/type/thickness/distribution/etc. of metal, you may observe some heating of the metal itself in the microwave or none at all.  You may also observe some arcing of electricity or none at all.  In any event, when these microwaves hit the metal, free electrons on the surface of the metal end up moving from side to side very rapidly.  This, in turn, prevents the electric wave from entering the metal; thus, the waves end up being reflected instead.  However, there is also the potential that this ends up creating a sufficient charge density that the electrical potential in the metal object exceeds the dielectric breakdown of air.  When this happens, it will result in arcing inside your microwave, from that metal to another electrical conductor with lower potential (often the wall of the microwave).  In extreme cases, these electrical sparks can end up damaging the wall by burning small holes in the metal wall.  It can also end up burning out the magnetron in your microwave oven or, in modern microwaves, can provide a surge that ends up damaging sensitive microelectronics, possibly killing your microwave or making it unsafe to use, in the case of a hole in the inner metal wall in your microwave.
Another way it can kill the magnetron of your microwave is when enough of the generated microwaves don’t get absorbed, such as if the food is wrapped in aluminum foil or mostly enclosed in a metal container.  This can create a lot of energy not getting absorbed, with nowhere to go but eventually back to the magnetron, which can eventually damage the magnetron.  Once again, killing your microwave oven.
On a more mundane level, something like a spoon or a metal plate or the like, positioned correctly, will simply make your food potentially not cook normally.  On that note, it is once again, actually acceptable to put metal in a microwave under the proper conditions.  Some microwaves even have metal grates inside for setting food on, such as is often the case with certain convection ovens.  There are also certain types of metal pots and pans that are microwave safe.  These all, however, are carefully designed to not cause any problems in your microwave oven.  In general, putting metal in the microwave is unsafe, not because you are at risk of bodily harm or the like (though in extreme cases a fire might be started in your microwave), but, more to the point, primarily because it has the potential of damaging your microwave in the ways listed above.

You Actually Use All of Your Brain, Not 10%

You Actually Use All of Your Brain, Not 10%

Over the years, the myth that you only use about 10% of your brain has been widely spread with the source of this myth often falsely attributed to Albert Einstein. It turns out though, that every part of the brain gets used, despite what Hollywood; snake-oil type self help peddlers; and many others would have you believe.

All other evidence aside, intuitively, if 90% of the brain wasn’t used for anything, then damage to those parts of the brain that comprise that 90% wouldn’t affect a person at all. In reality though, damage to just about any part of the brain, even tiny amounts, tends to have profound effects on the person who suffers that damage, at least in the short term. Further, given the amount of your body’s resources your brain uses, if 90% of it were worthless, it would be an incredible waste.
For more concrete evidence, brain scans, courtesy of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) technologies, show us that even while we are sleeping every part of the brain shows at least a small amount of activity and most areas of the brain are active at any given moment, assuming the person being scanned hasn’t ever suffered some form of brain damage. Amazing amounts of research have gone into mapping the brain, in terms of figuring out the function of various parts of the brain, and, to date, no area has been found that doesn’t have some function, even though that function may not be yet wholly understood.
So where did this myth really come from? There are a few potential sources, though no one knows for sure. Probably the most popularly cited source is Harvard psychologists William
James and Boris Sidis with their “reserve energy” theories in the late 19th/early 20th century.
“We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.” Sidis even put the theories to practice raising his son, William Sidis, who was a child prodigy and for a time considered the smartest human alive, by IQ anyways. However, Boris Sidis himself dismissed tests trying to measure intelligence as “silly, pedantic, absurd, and grossly misleading.” (For more on Sidis and his son, see: A Genius Among Us: The Sad Story of William J. Sidis)
The “reserve energy” theory was later summarized by Lowell Thomas down to, “The average person develops only 10% of their latent mental ability,” which of course at some point could well have evolved in popular culture into, “You only use 10% of your brain.”
Another theory is that it lies in misinterpretation of neurological research. For instance, research in the early 20th century indicated that only 10% of the neurons in the brain are firing at any given instant. Alternatively, research indicating only about 10% of the brain is composed of neurons, with the rest being glial cells, which support and regulate neurons in various ways.
As to why the myth became popular, it’s easy to see why people would be drawn to such a notion. Everybody would love to have it be the case that they naturally only use 10% of their potential brain power. Thus, if they could just magically unlock even a little of the other 90%, they could be the next Albert Einstein or perhaps even develop telekinetic or psychic powers, as is often pushed by Hollywood and others when this myth is mentioned. Even today, numerous self help books and seminars are devoted to trying to help you unlock that mythical other 90%. In the end, we’re better off using that time and money to try to further develop the supposed “10%” we already use.
